Did you come down with a case of cabin fever? Winter in Maine can be long and sometimes it’s just too cold to enjoy the outdoors (like going ice skating or cross country skiing). Don’t worry! Below is a list of fun activities that will still get you outside of the house.

1Go Rock Climbing

Rock climbing is a great way to get the blood pumping in the middle of winter. The two indoor climbing communities at Salt Pump Climbing (Scarborough) and Evo Rock & Fitness (Portland) have resources for adults and kids, beginners and pros, so there’s no excuse!

2Enjoy a Tasty Tour

If you’re seeking a real Maine experience during the sugaring season (February through April), you should hit up Kinney’s Sugarhouse (Knox) or Hilltop Boilers (Newfield). It doesn’t get better than a Maine sugarhouse!

Stonewall Kitchen (York) is another classic Maine destination with tons of variety for your taste buds. They have a few stores in Maine, but for the full experience you should go to their headquarters down in York. For those that are inland, “breakfast on the farm” at Jillsons Farm & Sugarhouse (Sabattus) cannot be missed.

3Shop Until You Drop

Maine offers two premium shopping experience in Kittery and Freeport (can’t miss L.L. Bean). Both locations have great outlets. If a more “Main Street” shopping experience is what you seek, consider the picture perfect coastal cities of Kennebunkport, Boothbay Harbor and Rockland. Inland towns like Hallowell, Bridgton and Bethel also have quaint shopping experiences.

Searching for a more quirky Maine shopping adventure? Take a stroll through the Southern Maine Indoor Flea Market (Scarborough). You never know what you’ll stumble upon there!

4Take the Whole Family Out

The Children’s Museum & Theater of Maine (Portland) and the multi-level Maine Discovery Museum (Bangor) have been family favorites for years. The new Portland Science Center always seems to be rotating good exhibits through, too.

Looking for something a bit more exciting? Check out Maine Indoor Karting (Scarborough) for some fun around the track, Jokers Fun and Games (Westbrook) for an afternoon at the arcade or Playland Adventures (Brewer) for a sweet indoor playground.

5Try an Escape Room

“Escape room” games have swept the nation in popularity and Maine hasn’t missed out! We have some great options in The Escape Room (Portland), Bangor Escape Rooms (Bangor), Maine Escape Games (South Portland) and GTFO Escape Room (South Portland). These timed puzzles are a great way to challenge a team or group of family and friends and they’re always fun!
