Today is Valentine’s Day, which seems like the perfect day to explore Maine’s only heart-shaped island together!

Harbor Island (the boring but official name) is a 22 acre island that provides shelter to boats directly off the local village of Buck’s Harbor in Brookesville, Maine.

The island was bought by Franklin Kurt in 1927 to save its trees from being logged for pulp. He and his family owned it for 85 years, until selling it in 2012 to the Maine Coast Heritage Trust for $2.35 million.

A couple years ago the only building on the whole island was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. The Maine Coast Heritage Trust has since sold the island to a new owner, adding in rules to restrict some development.
